The Chief of Operations and Spelling Bee Coordinator for IBI CENTRE Yola, Umar Faruq Baba-Inna, emphasized the importance of such events in an interview. “The aim of the IBI CENTRE is to encourage the reading culture in an extracurricular competitive exercise.
We are hopeful in having a final where the first, second, and third positions from the three local government areas will be invited for a spell-off and scrabble competition to select the most improved students and school by February,” Faruq Baba-Inna said.
Baba-Inna, a former Technical Director of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), highlighted the significant impact these competitions have on youth development.
“This sort of tournament is integral to the ecosystem. It’s the most important part. You can develop, but if there is no platform to showcase, then your products will not be seen,” he added.
This event marks the third Local Government Area in the state to host the Secondary School Spelling Bee and Scrabble competitions. Previous editions were held in Yola South LGA in February and Yola North LGA in July.
Baba-Inna elaborated on the broader objectives of these events. “We are hoping to use it as a springboard to galvanize support and create massive awareness about the game of Scrabble and its benefits to the young ones, including their parents, schools, and the Local Government officials.”
The project has garnered support from several notable organizations, including the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), the John Olusegun Foundation, the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Federal Medical Centre Yola, and the Center for Women and Adolescent Empowerment.
Additional support comes from the Aisha Abba Abdullahi Foundation, Fresh Air Pro-Life Empowerment Foundation, Watermax Bottle Water, JANNA Health Care Foundation, and KARATU Library Foundation.
Prizes for the event include four trophies (two for Spelling Bee and two for Scrabble), Scrabble dictionaries, boards, and Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaries. “Alhaji Abdulhamid Joda has graciously donated the dictionaries for us,” Baba-Inna concluded.
IBI CENTRE will also be organizing a Scrabble Clinic for Ibokun Community Public and Private Primary Schools pupils on the 21st of December at the CBT Center, Ibokun Grammar School, in Obokun LGA, Osun State.
This ongoing effort reflects a commitment to nurturing young minds through engaging and educational activities.
The upcoming ‘Take Scrabble to Schools’ event in Girei promises to be a landmark occasion, fostering a love for learning and healthy competition among students.
