Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called on Danladi Umar, Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), to resign from office amid growing controversies surrounding his tenure.
Falana made the call on Saturday night in a statement to Sunday Tribune, describing Umar’s voluntary resignation as “long overdue.”
The senior advocate also recounted a history of alleged abuses of office by the embattled CCT chairman, which, according to him, have tarnished the reputation of the tribunal.
He said, “Having grossly abused his office, Justice Danladi Umar ought to have resigned his appointment.
“He was once charged with corruption by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“He sent text messages threatening to eliminate me. I requested the police to conduct a discreet investigation. The police conducted the allegation and confirmed it.
“While the investigation was in progress, he went to a market in Wuse to fight.
“Two bar leaders reported him to the Legal Practitioners Commission.
“The Senate did not remove him but voted to recommend his removal on account of gross misconduct. The action of the Senate was in strict compliance with the provisions of the Convention.”
