AC Milan’s head coach, Paulo Fonseca, praised Samuel Chukwueze’s outstanding defensive work ethic following the team’s emphatic 3-0 victory against Empoli at the San Siro on Sunday.

Samuel Chukwueze played a prominent role in Milan’s intense 3-2 triumph over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League just a week before the clash against Empoli.

However, in the game against Empoli, he found himself on the bench, with Yunus Musah earning the nod to start on the right wing. This tactical choice contributed to Milan extending their impressive unbeaten streak to six games across all competitions.

During the post-match press conference, Fonseca discussed his strategic decisions, particularly about the playing styles of both Musah and Chukwueze. He noted the importance of having players adept at covering defensive roles, especially given Empoli’s tendency to launch long balls during the match.

“I’m really enjoying Musah’s contributions in that position. It was crucial to have someone capable of fulfilling that role to support the team defensively,” Fonseca said.

He went on to commend Chukwueze for his performance after coming on as a substitute, saying, “I was also very pleased with the way Chukwueze played this role, who came back into the box twice to aid defensive efforts. This tactical module gives us the balance we need in both defence and attack.”

Samuel Chukwueze nearly had a significant impact on the scoreline late in the match when he delivered a well-placed cross that reached Tammy Abraham at the back post. Unfortunately, the English striker was unable to convert the opportunity, sending his shot wide from close range, which left Milan fans momentarily frustrated.

Since his summer transfer from Villarreal, Chukwueze has faced challenges in securing a consistent starting position, having appeared 13 times for Milan across all competitions, with a solitary goal to show for his efforts this season.

His struggle for regular playtime has reportedly caught the attention of Turkish giants Besiktas, who are contemplating a January transfer to bring the dynamic winger to their club.

Despite this interest, AC Milan views Chukwueze as an essential asset, particularly as a backup for key players like Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao.
